From jlearhea at gmail.com Mon Nov 30 00:50:41 2009 From: jlearhea at gmail.com (Jennifer Giles) Date: Mon, 30 Nov 2009 00:50:41 -0500 Subject: [Vimyridge] SD941130.1 Off to the Asteroids.. Lt Nix, Smith (NPC) Message-ID: <1db429a10911292150v6c2d87f9pe74fa9a4bea7c000@mail.gmail.com> Smith acknowledged, "Thank you. Smith out." Thrusters charged and lifted the vessel smoothly from the deck, "Lieutenant. Hold tight." Once they were past the doors and at what would be considered a just barely safe distance from the vessel he pulled the throttle as it were and took the shuttle out at increasing speeds. "It feels good to be alive doesn't it?" A quick jerk starboard to avoid the warned about debris. Kylee settled back in her seat, watching as the shuttle lifted off and exited the ship. She arched her brow at Smith's question as he increased speed. "Sure, though I bet you could go faster.. I gather Cait has never had the experience of flying with you in a shuttle.." she stated, a smirk on her lips as they dodged the debris. "When we do get out to the correct area in the asteroid field, I'm going to want to go a bit slower as I scan the area." "I must say I avoid the doctor like the plague," Smith replied, "So no she's not been with me as far as I can remember in recent history." He then laughed, "Why do you feel she'd already be in a pool of her own bile?" There was a sound of pride in the question then he nodded, "I will slow down." Kylee shrugged, chuckling softly. "With the way she was giving Lox hell.. probably.. and no, you can't pull that with me.. I'm immune to sickness due to rough rides.." she said. "Okay.. when we reach these coordinates, slow to quarter impulse so that I can begin the scans.." she said, pointing to an area on the flight path. The flight went by without further incident, the view of the planet below showed serene beauty with was a complete one-eighty from what the inhabitants were actually living through. "By my estimates we should be there in approximately two minutes." Smith's fingers pressed at the console to turn the pitch by thirty degrees as they lifted further away from the atmosphere of the planet. Kylee nodded, spinning about in the chair. She began to prepare the sensors to pick up the necessary readings, searching for signs of any unusual ship signatures, or the sign that a tractor beam may have been used and that followed the correct path back towards the sun. The smooth ride became noticeably bumpy, "We're hitting turbulence Lieutenant. Shields are holding however," he commented in a grateful tone considering their path was towards solar flares which was in his mind quite ludicrous! "I need to compensate so hold tight," the shuttle jolted and dipped before he found the 'sweet spot' as it were, "Sorry for the delay but by the display we have arrived to your first requested location. I don't recommend we stay still long though," Smith's eyes went directly to the monitor displaying the readings from the constant running scans. Kylee braced herself as the ride became more turbulent. She waited for it to calm as she finished calibrating the sensors. "Just keep us away from the really large rocks and we'll be okay.." she said, a smirk on her lips. She settled back in her seat as the shuttle settled, finally reaching the first location on their little "tour" of the field. "Don't worry.. each site will take no more than fifteen minutes.." she said, beginning the scans of the area. "There's signs that someone has been here.. but.. not recent enough.." "What's your estimate Lieutenant?" Smith spun in his seat to face the woman for a moment before return his attention to his own console and vessel stabilization. A warning beacon suddenly chirped, "Ummm Lieutnant. Sensors are picking up increased activity on the star's surface." "About.. three days old, from what I can tell.. and with the flares, unable to be definite on that.." she said, her gaze snapping over to Smith quickly at his words. She quickly shifted her scan to the star, a frown appearing on her lips. "We need to move, quickly.. Find the largest asteroid that we can use as a shield to help protect the shuttle from a direct hit," she said, keeping her attention on the sun. "Affirmative!" Smith felt a bead of sweat slide slowly down his temple and his heart rate increase and thump strongly. Deftly he turned starboard, grateful for seatbelts as the vessel nearly did a loop in the tight arch. "Straight ahead I remember a field." The shuttle less than gracefully avoided contact with smaller asteroid debris as it arrived, thrusters suddenly hit to reverse to slow the shuttle and take her into a small alcove protected by a series of asteroids in a tight formation. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Luckily, the only thing injured was her dignity...well, there were some scratches on the face plate. Maybe she could get Justin to buff it for her. Her hand came up to tap her combadge."People, Wilkinson. Anything that says people went that way...dropped bread crumbs, personal belongings...I've noted personal items tucked into the alcoves along the way." She stepped around the next turn and into the central area where people were. "In fact, I do believe I've found life...." Kat nodded barely paying much attention as she stumbled over something for a brief moment. Then regained her footing. She rose a brow as she tipped her light downward to look at what she'd tripped over. She glanced over at Marcus "Are you finding anything?" she asked as she knelt down to get a closer look realizing it was rocks that tripped her. Marcus looked to Kat and shook his head, "No, but Commander Blake, it sounds like you might be having more luck than us?" He queried. He looked this way then that, signalling for Kat to pick up the pace if possible, waiting for Cait to answer while he added, "But if the Commander has found something it could be that all of these tunnels will bare some sign of life." "wait a second" Kat said as she looked ahead "it appears these tunnels all converge into one large cave'" she said as she looked at the readings on her tricorder and began to hear faint voices. [Cave Entrance] Justin arrived pushing the grav sled with the portable shield generator and power plant. He worked it into place so he could get a shield up and running over the entrance to the caves. [Deeper in the Cave structure] Balkion stood up at the the scuttling sound of gasps to his left and his eyes shifted as he noticed all heads turn toward a small entrance, "Xoron," he said, "Come with me." Curiously the male waited for the other to reach his position as he moved ahead, gently pushing people aside to get ahead and see what had startled the group. Xoron levered himself up with a grunt then made his way over to Balkion, trying to be careful of the others despite being built more like a bull, all mass and muscle. Then followed the other man towards the disturbance. [Elsewhere in another tunnel] Juard still following the Lt. started to ask a question but didn't since he was hushed a while ago. He was thinking if they would ever get off the planet of what he would do. Nick canted his head breathing lightly, despite his elevated heart rate. It prevented his visor from fogging up. He tapped his communicator lightly, then spoke softly. "This is Reed, I'm picking up voices, but I can't make them out right now, I suggest we continue to proceed with caution," he said. Juard tapped his communicator so that he could speak to his leader leading him through the cave."I agree. I can hear them too." he spoke rather loudly. Well, at least that is what he thought. [Main Cave] Balkion pushed people aside then stood firmly over Cait who sat on her rear on the ground. "Who are you?" he said, violet eyes narrowing in question as he breathed in resulting in the puffing out of his chest as his foot gently nudged her leg. "Commander Caitlin Blake, CMO of the Vimyridge. We're here to help." She gave the man a smile as she dropped her hand from her combadge and eyed Balkion and his rather huge sidekick. "And who might I have the pleasure of speaking with?" Several other replies ran through her mind like oh....who the dickens are you and why are you looming over me but she managed to keep brain from engaging mouth. "Oh so you are one of the ones the large Cho'lu spoke of." Balkion acknowledged that he at least had contact with Cho'lu at some point previous by his statement."So you are here to stop the the Sun's tears of anger against our people and planet?" "I don't know if we can do anything about that but I do know it's being looked into by our best science officers." Cait replied. "What I'm here to do is, with your people's permission, check everyone out, treat whoever is sick from the...Sun's tears, and make sure none of the rest gets sick." It wouldn't take much longer before Nick would emerge with the young medical officer, his weapon trained toward the backs of the others for a moment before lowering it. They didn't seem too hostile. He kept his weapon at the ready though, nodding toward Doctor Blake. As if to let her know the calvary, if necessary, had arrived. He'd remain silent, motioning for Juard to do the same as he simply watched the exchange. Xoron, due to his size and bulk, hadn't missed the entrance of the others, in his general sweep of the various openings and keeping an eye on things. He nudged Balkion, since the other man was doing to the bulk of the speaking, "Others, armed." That's all he said, though his mind wondered who came to help save lives armed with weapons that they were so willing to point at those they were supposed to be saving. After several minutes Kat made her way into the larger area still holding her tricorder out in front of her. She slipped her illumination device into it's pocket and slowly made her way into the room. She saw Cait and the others already there. well that was helpful. if all the tunnels lead here than why did we bother to split up." she muttered mainly to herself turning to make sure Marcus kept up with her. She looked down at her tricorder again and rubbed her tired eyes as she began to possibly pick up other readings indicating other lifeforms. Marcus had walked with Kat, there own discoveries of small toys and left overs from something or other, leading them precisely to this place. "And there is the rest of the team." Cait said. [Cave Entrance] Justin finished setting up the portable shield emitter and mini-fusion reactor. He tapped his comm. "Lox to away team, Cave entrance shield is operational." He then took out his tricorder, scanned, and studied his readings. [Main Cave] Marcus nodded to Lox's comments, "Any news on communicating with the ship Commander?" He looked around at the group, a little distant so that he could communicate with Lox without interrupting the meeting. Balkion nodded toward his counterpart and took notice of the weapons, "You have no need for those here Sir. Truly who'd be stupid enough to kill the hand that saves them?" Nick frowned a bit, "That may be the case, but I'd like to have it handy..." he said simply, he had the weapon lowered, but within easy reach. He glanced toward Doctor Blake once more. "About.. three days old, from what I can tell.. and with the flares, unable to be definite on that.." she said, her gaze snapping over to Smith quickly at his words. She quickly shifted her scan to the star, a frown appearing on her lips. "We need to move, quickly.. Find the largest asteroid that we can use as a shield to help protect the shuttle from a direct hit," she said, keeping her attention on the sun. "Affirmative!" Deftly he turned starboard, grateful for seatbelts as the vessel nearly did a loop in the tight arch. "Straight ahead I remember a field." The shuttle less than gracefully avoided contact with smaller asteroid debris as it arrived, thrusters suddenly hit to reverse to slow the shuttle and take her into a small alcove protected by a series of asteroids in a tight formation. Kylee gripped the armrest as the shuttle made the sharp turns. "Just take it nice and easy.. this place lends plenty of places to hide," she said, continuing to gather information as they moved, jarred back and forth as he manuevered around the debris. She leaned forward as they came to a stop, quickly launching a probe out to gather as much information as possible before the flare destroyed it. "Come on.. come on.." she muttered, looking over all the readings, searching for any clue. Smith looked over his shoulder, "Take it easy?" Eyes nearly popping out, "There's a flare brewing and you are telling me to take it easy? I don't know about you but I've got something good waiting for me to return to finish up and so I'm going to do what I need to to ensure I get that finishing up done." All the while he monitored the probe, "Thirty seconds until destination is reached." Kylee arched her brow as she looked over, studying him. "Yes.. and we are in an area that is protected against the flare.. so there is no worry about any damage.." she stated, before turning her attention back to the data streaming across her console. She chewed her lower lip, her heart racing with excitement as she waited for the flare to reach the area. She tilted her head, blinking as she caught a trail that seemed slightly abnormal. "There.. that's where the asteroids were sent from. Computer, save data in separate file, Nix- Alpha Beta zero zero one." Smith stated the most logical, "Are they not coming from the... sun?" He asked quizzically..."I mean you know that bright orb thing that just shot a gaseous ball of oozing goo out our way to kill us?" Kylee blinked, looking over at Smith confusedly. "What in the hell are you talking about? I'm focusing on the asteroids.. not the flares.. since the asteroids are probably the source of the flares... I'm trying to find who can be behind it.." she said, focusing back on the data, seeking out any anomalies in the area before the sun destroyed them. Smith shrugged just as the shuttle's comms chirped and the Captain's voice spoke once Smith initiated the comms, "This is Captain Vilqa. Please confirm your status, we are picking up increased solar activity." Kylee tapped her comm badge as she stared at the console. "We're fine, captain. Currently taking shelter behind some asteroids to avoid any damage from the solar flare," she stated, tapping the comm as her fingers tap against the armrest. "Come on.. just give me a clue. anything.." she muttered, knowing she had only a few more seconds before the flare destroyed the probe. "Be on alert Lieutenant. We cannot afford to lost either of you nor the shuttle. Are you collecting the data you believed would be available?" Vilqa asked again while Smith calibrated the thrusters to keep the shuttle as steady as he could in the temporary shelter. "Lieutenant I am noticing two of the asteroids are splitting." Smith said so not only Nix would hear but due to the open comms to the vessel the Captain as well.Vilqa's voice once more filled the cabin, "The energy bursts from the solar flare causing instability." "Yes Captain, Smith and I are well aware of the danger out here and are staying ahead of any problems. Currently found some information that isolates the location of the asteroids' origin,, searching for any signs of ships that were in the area," she stated, shifting the view on the console to find a location to stay out of harm's way. Quickly studying the surrounding area, she isolated a cluster of large asteroids. "We'll make it back safe and sound, Captain, the asteroid field is far enough away that the overall energy of the solar flare is far less than the planet.." she stated, closing the connection for the moment. "Smith, take us to these coordinates.. We'll be safe there until the flare passes.." "Captain, shields are holding steady." Smith interjected in hopes to calm the Captain's worries. "Thank you Mr. Smith. Ms Nix I suggest you two getting a move on soon. Vilqa out." Nix had said what the Captain needed to hear and would not call off the mission -- for now. "Will do, Captain," she said, focusing back on the area she was searching, tilting her head as she noted something unusual. "Computer, save readings to Nix Alpha one zero." -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Kat stood near by watching as Cait removed her headgear debating on following suit as she looked over the readings on her own tricorder. She looked around at the cave while she waited for the answer to Cait's question. Marcus kept himself several feet away while he continued speaking with Lox. "Alright Commander, let me know the moment communications is up and send a message to the Vimyridge. Apologise for delay and apprise them of our current situation. We have contact, they seem helpful enough. Commander Blake is currently assessing the medical situation." "Will do sir." Justin responded while hurrying back to the shuttle to complete the update. Balkion nodded, "In the far east alcove we have arranged a makeshift medical station, our supplies are limited as we truly did not have time to collect all that was needed. There were others who simply got off the planet or traveled to the far pole which I have not heard from so I do not know their situation." He said grimly, "Follow me." His hand outstretched and pointed easterly. "I will take you to those who are visibly ill, it does seem the illness strikes quickly. Marcus looked about him, "Lieutenant Reed, please go with the doctor." He then looked to Balkion, "While you talk with Commander Blake is there someone I can question and talk to about how all of this started?" He loosely waved with his hand at the cave interior. Balkion released a heavy sigh and closed his side tilting eyelids a moment which for the first time allowed the new federation visitors to see the unique lavender eyelid colouring. The local civilization was human in stature though for the most part were somewhat rotund in the middle, their skin tone was dark as if tanning was as popular as eating and in nearly polar opposite to humans the very young had grey hair while the mid aged and older locals had rich tones of varying black, reds and purples. At a quick glance it seemed the general population lived a flamboyant life; the attire was shockingly, to say it politely, 'unique'... to say it blatantly it was bright with to some would be perceived as ill matching colours and accessories. While Balkion may personally seem subdued he was simply be cautious. "When this all started," he finally said after thinking a few moments, "It's been getting slowly progressively worse. At first we just thought it was regular solar interference. The Star often sheds tears that in itself is not unusual; what is unusual is her near rage she appears to have against us." He places his hands in his pockets, "About a month ago we lost all satellite entertainment communication." Xoron nodded his head, "I've heard some mutterings. People noticed the increased tears started after your people first came." "How long ago did the rest of the planet become uninhabitable? When did the others leave for the far pole?" Marcus had so many unanswered questions that the K'ylana needed answering, sooner rather than later. He shrugged, "It was somewhat sudden, as the tears got stronger we noticed adverse reactions, loss of animal life and crops. There was somewhat of a mass exodus for a lack of a better word. We however belong in these lands and chose to remain." Again the big Xoron nodded, crossing his arms and planting his feet as if daring anyone to try to make him leave. Nick merely nodded. Making his way towards the doctor, planning to stay close enough to watch her back, in the event of, whatever... but far enough to not get in her way if she needed to work her magic. He always did like having a doctor around as it was. Meant that he rarely ever had to really perform first aid, sure he knew how to do it, but he preferred saving a life before they need first aid. Not by administering it. Kat frowned at Marcus's request even gave him an odd look. "Excuse me Commander Saladin .....but you seem to have miscounted the number of doctors present." she stated trying not to take it personally as herself and Jurard would also follow along with Cait as rendering aid was what they were all there for. She would however stay out of Nick's way things still not back to normal between them though comforted by his presence regardless. "I apologize that I wasn't clear Commander Wilkinson. I would expect that you and Lieutenant Juard would both accompany Commander Blake. I was merely indicating that Lieutenant Reed should go with Commander Blake wherever she was." Marcus fell quiet for a few moments. "Commander Blake, do we know when we first came to this planet?" He was puzzled, if there was a connection with humans coming to this planet, how did it fit in with their present theory that the other planet might somehow be responsible...maybe they had jumped the gun. Kat still frowned at that sighing softly keeping the rest of her comments to herself while remaining focused on the mission at hand. Balkion spoke quickly, "You are not responsible. You are not our first visitors! We are a planet of entertainment. I have heard rumours of some place called Ri.. Ree... Ratha?" He couldn't quite remember, "They are some so called planet of pleasure? Or somesuch? They have nothing on us!" Behind Balkion there was a rumble of cheers and upraised fists! "Risa..." Nick said, pausing at any looks he'd get. He'd just shrug. Yeah.. he'd been there before... on an extended vacation... before Starfleet. Balkion thought a moment, "Yes.. Reetha." he reiterated yet again not getting it quite right despite the correction. <> -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Xoron looked at Marcus, "No one said you were here for any other reason. One might think you felt guilty. You are not the first, Fed-er-ations to come here. As Balkion said, we are a planet of entertainment. Your people come, we entertain. Can't do that right now though." Cait looked over at Marcus. She'd been listening intently to the conversation as she waited to be taken to those who were already ill. The drugs used to treat this form of radiation poisoning had been carefully researched to make sure that the cure wasn't worse than the illness. Aside from a headache, nausea, and peeing purple till it was out of their system and considering their seemingly love of color, they just might like that. [shuttle] Justin got the comms boosted "Away team to Vimyridge." [Vimy Ridge] Elmin scrunched his brow and cocked his head to the side, "I am picking up radio frequencies that match Federation specs however I cannot pick up any specific message." Vilqa perked slightly and looked toward Toby as her brow raised but before she could issue the order Toby was on the officer... "Open a frequency to match the frequency being used, and boost our signal. It is most likely the away team." Toby rose from his seat and moved over to Elmin and his console, as if about to do the work himself. "Yes Commander." [Shuttle] Justin continued to make adjustments to counteract the flares "Away team to Vimyridge." [Vimy Ridge] "Comeon... Comeon..." Elmin muttered under his breath as he boosted the signal to near max when a muffled message came through. He could not only sense Toby behind him but swore he could feel the Commander's breath on his neck. "We are locked Captain and channels open to send though we are at the tail end of a solar flare spike." Vilqa stood up quickly and tugged on her jacket as she cant her head to the side as if to help her hear better, "What that Justin?" She said hearing the contorted message. "This is the USS Vimy Ridge." She said in a firm and concise tone, "Repeat your message please." [Shuttle] Justin smiled a moment "Away team to Vimyrigs. Lox here. Do you read my transmission?" [Vimy Ridge] Again Toby was responding before K`y could get her mouth open to make a reply, "Yes, we hear you. Barely. What is your situation?" He refrained from asking where Cait was, he didn't want to sound like a nervous husband, but she was the head of the team. [shuttle] "We are safe. We have made contact with those in the caves. Doctor Blake is checking things there now. The flares have kept up from communicating. I'm getting that solved as you can tell." Justin boosted the signal a bit more. "Things down here are pretty roasted. Metaphasic shielding is holding up well so far." [Vimy Ridge] "Is there anything else that you need? We could try to send some things down." Toby forced himself to remain calm, they had a perfectly legitimate reason for taking so long to respond, and as to why it wasn't Cait contacting the ship. [shuttle] "Not at the moment commander. I will let the rest of the away team know we now have communications to the ship, and they may have items they need." Justin replied. "Very good. And Justin... Do keep us informed." Toby smiled even though Justin couldn't see it. [Shuttle] "Yes commander. Lox out." With that Justin dropped the connection to the ship to conserve power. "Lox to away team. Surface to ship communications are now possible from the shuttle." [Further in the caves] Marcus breathed a sigh of relief as Lox's voice came over the comms, "Good job Commander. Just to confirm, communications are only possible from the shuttle?" "Yes sir. The power consumption is quite high, our suits don't generate enough power to reach the ship through the flares." Justin replied. Marcus turned to Cait, "Do you want me to head back and report to the ship while you examine the medical situation or will you leave Commander Wilkinson to oversee and feedback yourself Commander?" "Go ahead and make the report, please. I'm just getting started here and I want to watch these scans myself." Cait replied as she knelt next to a young woman who was obviously suffering from radiation burns. Her touch was gentle and she exuded an aura of comfort and confidence.
