Commander Sie will be with him each step of the way and both are fine officers." He paced about the room, "I have mixed feelings about this away mission. I have been in harms way before, but perhaps my time on Vulcan has left me with a greater appreciation of the calm, logical serenity that seems eternal upon that planet. It is certainly a far cry from possible radioactive death." He gave an involuntary shudder, "And yet, that is precisely what is probably happening to the people on this planet right now. We have heard little from Cho'lu and can only assume the worst." He stopped by his replicator, "Tea, earl gray." "Nix will be happy, she has been itching to get off the ship since we arrived in the system. I think though, that she perhaps would rather be investigating the asteroids than tarrying planet side. Once she has the bit between her teeth she never stops." He took a sip. "The captain is her usual collected self, but the war has taken its toll upon her. In all the long years that I have known her K'ylana has never been this withdrawn. Command to, I am sure, has helped insulate her from the challenges of close friends who may have drawn her out long before she became as I now see her today. Toby and Cait care deeply for her but with a child of their own I think that things have slipped through without them spotting it. After this is through I will attempt to bring a little more relaxation into the captain's life. I think she is ready for it." He took another sip, and another, resting in the silence that flooded him with a calm before the storm of their away team mission. Pt 1- Vilqa, Lox, Saladin, Reed, Ivri, Daephon Message-ID: +.+ General orders from Captain Vilqa+.+ Form up Shuttle Bay One 1245hrs Departure time 1430hrs for Besbooari Away team members: Shuttle Pilot Garret. Team Lead Blake, C. Crew: Reed, Azten, Lox, Nix, Saladin, Wilkinson, Ivri EVA Suits Mandatory. Rendezvous with Cho'lu at Southbari Cave Region ..... +.+ Vilqa stopped re reading the memo at the mention of caves and stood up to walk toward the shuttle bay. She knew she could not head to the surface and it irked her to no-end as the one thing about being a Commanding Officer -- lack of time getting hands dirty with the micro. [Shuttle bay] Justin was doing a full pre-flight on one of the shuttles they had modified with extra shielding. So far every checked met with his level of standard, which was much higher than Starfleet's. "Computer, update shuttle detail records to show this shuttle has been modified per work order 234-e46. Send request to command for continued use under this configuration after this mission is complete, priority.. low." With a familiar whoosh the doors to the shuttle bay opened and the Captain stepped into the vast room into the hustle and bustle of those preparing. With a slightly furrowed brow the Captain walked deeper into the hub toward the shuttle with the opened door. Nick had gathered this to be a rather.... interesting... away team mission... Pushing away most of his darker thoughts out of his mind entirely, he settled on the task at hand. Mainly ensuring the shuttle was being loaded, complete with the equipment needed to get a thorough radiation scan of everyone boarding the shuttle for the return trip. Security moved about like ant drones, covering the bay itself, working in unison as Nick helped where he could, but... with the massive blue Andorian on the surface, that left him in charge of security... and though he couldn't be everywhere at once, he was all over the bay to direct his teams. He was currently, looking at the data on one PADD presented to him. He couldn't help but mentally chuckle over it, the crewman standing at attention before him staring at him, puzzled. Thing was... when his recruiter had asked him why he had chosen Starfleet... was because he said he didn't want to worry about the data work. And here he was, doing just that. "Alright crewman, this looks on the up an' up," he said, smiling toward the man. He handed him the PADD back. "Go ahead and finish getting loaded, report to me once done," he told him. The man gave his affirmative then moved off. He just hoped Atzen would get there to help out soon... this would be his first awayteam mission planetside... he just hoped it wasn't another rehash of the events with the Tamco... The Counselor had spent some of her time helping get together the things needed out of Sickbay. Ivri finished placing a few personal items in a pack some of them were a jacket, a hand light and a PADD. She double checked to make sure her tricorder was on her waist. It was one item that important to her profession if she needed to help out as a medic. The Counselor headed towards the shuttle bay, preparing to get ready to wear a EVA Suit. Vilqa observed quietly for a few more minutes before she motioned Reed over, "What's the absolute latest information you have from Cho'lu or have communications still been limited?" Marcus arrived right then, having finished his meeting with Skylar. Everything was happening so quickly now, and he knew it was fortunate that many of the people he would be on the away team with were crew members he had worked with in the past. "Saladin reporting Captain." He smiled, it wouldn't be long and it would be time to don the EVA's. Takis had given himself plenty of time to get ready for this, his first mission with the new crew. As it turned out, he'd needed it, having accidentally injured a couple of fellow crewmen's toes in the turbolift in his haste. He was glad to see he'd arrived pretty much on time, though. He was carrying some scientific equipment on his back, basic stuff that the Chief had asked him to bring. Since Takis' large frame had the capacity, he'd additionally brought some extra survival gear and a redundant system or two. Everyone in the shuttlebay seemed quite busy, so he hung back near the doorway, waiting to depart. Nick moved to the Captain's side, frowning at her question. "Very limited, ma'am... last I heard was in my report," he said. He had been probably annoying the poor Captain with said reports of each time the Cho'Lu had contacted him, which... subsequently, had been every hour for the most part... until much recently. "The last call from him was a verification that we were good to go... though I would advise we proceed with the utmost precaution, the Ridge should maintain a safe distance, and my suggestion to the doctor will be we keep the planet between the shuttle and the unstable star, might not offer us a hundred percent protection, but even one percent odds are better than none..." he told her. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Pt 2 - Vilqa, Blake, Blake, Lox, Saladin, Wilkinson, Garret Message-ID: Kylee arrived at that time, going over the latest data that had been received on her PADD. She ignored the others, for the most part, wanting to make sure they weren't going down to any surprises. She still wanted to bow out of this and head to the asteroids, but doubted the captain would be willing to let her go off on her own, even though she was adamant she could find more clues there on the surface. Leaning against the wall just to the side of the door, she made sure to stay out of everyone's way. On her back she wore a pack containing the necessary supplies she had not given to Takis to carry, as well as a few extra things she thought she could use. Kat gathered the necessary equipment she'd need from sickbay before putting on her EVA suit and heading for the shuttle bay to meet up with the rest of the team. she paused a moment outside to gather her thoughts. she had something to prove with this mission she pushed all thoughts of personal issues aside. she stepped inside the shuttle bay and off to the side for a moment to double check her equipment a phaser and medical tricorder holstered to the utility belt on her waist. She looked up spotting the Counselor and walked over to join her. "Hello Counselor" she said with a smile. she'd looked around at the rest of the team gathering giving various members a brief nod. Cait made her way into the shuttle bay with her gear in hand, including the specially made EVA suit. Toby and Rose had been kissed goodbye and Jewel had been given some attention. Now she was ready for business and headed over to the shuttle to make sure all the equipment they would need had been loaded. Toby followed his wife into the shuttle bay, Rose left with day care for the moment. He wasn't going, but that didn't mean he shouldn't be there, he looked about taking everyone and everything in. Justin finished the preflight, and stepped out of the shuttle. His EVA suit was sitting on one of the crates that his engineering teems were loading onto the shuttle. "Shuttle MacDowell ready, all system check out." The Type 11 shuttle, one of the larger shuttles used on the ship, was sitting next to a second type 11 shuttle that the engineers were just finishing the shield and radiation hardening modifications. He reached over to the crate, to collect his EVA suit. Vilqa furrowed her brow, "Anybody see Garret?" She said loudly in hopes that someone would know the answer. The 'Ridge was in a safe location now from the flares but the shuttle ridge would be treacherous none the less. While waiting for her reply she spotted Toby, heads taller than a lot of the crew and approached. Marcus caught K'ylana's eye and shook his head before proceeding to grab one of the E.V.A's and don it suitably. He hated these things, and guessed everyone did. It made him feel so self conscious. He moved around like a meandering leviathan and it was impossible to do anything with any great precision. He felt like he was at the mercy of whatever conditions were out there, even though in fact, it was saving him from such conditions. Toby watched K`y approach, and gave her a brief smile as she neared. "Captain." He said both in way of greeting and questioning. "Commander," Vilqa said then silenced as the FCO rushed forward. With that, Matthew strode in, rushed. He stepped up to the captain. "Sorry i'm late, ma'am. Ready for duty" "Mr. Garret. It's alright." Vilqa stated, "I suggest you seek Commander Lox and discuss what servicing he has done to the shuttles and you should do any preflight checks that you require. We will be flying heavy with medication supplies." Matt nodded. "Yes, ma'am" he said as he looked for Commander Lox The part klingon then addressed Cait who was standing by Toby, "Doc ready to be separated from your daughter?" Toby nodded, "Yes, I think she is. At least she didn't spend a whole hour saying good bye to Rose and reminding me and the day care how to take care of her, just a half hour." He grinned. "I think she's looking forward to being directly involved again." Cait grinned at Toby. "It was actually only 15 minutes...for each and I'm ready. Rose is almost a year old now and Momma does enjoy getting her hands dirty." "Over here Mr. Garrett" Matthew walked up to the man and nodded. "Commander" he said as he grabbed an EVA suit. "The captain told me to talk to you about the work done on the shuttle. I will be doing some pre-flight checks as soon as we are done here" "Flight controls are unchanged. We removed one of the phaser emitters, so you will only have 2/3 fire power. We enhanced one of the transporter pads to handle wothing throghthe radiation, however, that is for all else failes situations. I can't garentee it's safety. As for sensors and other onboard systems, we hardened them against radiation as much as we could. The shuttle will feel sluggish in the gravity well of the planet. It will also require about 1/3 more power for ascention." Justin rattled off as he checked the seals around his boots and waist. Matthew nodded. "Understood. Ill try and keep us out of fire fights. Thank you, Commander. ill begin the pre-flight check ups." he said as he walked on board the shuttle. Justin grinned "They should all check out better than Starfleet specs. If not, let me know." Justin said as he fitted the EVA gloves to the suit. "I hate these things" he said quietly. "I hate them too" Matthew said from the helm of the shuttle "Oh yes.. shield control auto deploys the metaphasic shielding. You cannot turn it off during flight. So remember it will be draining your energy all the time." Justin added as he picked up his helmet and boarded the shuttle to take to co-pilot's seat. Vilqa nodded toward Toby before she whistled loudly by placing her fingers at her lips, "Everybody suit up! Away team members line up for inspection. Lox run diagnostics on each suit and confirm each suit is at optimal fitting." There was no way she'd risk losing any crew member to faulty equipment -- cautious yes, overly -- not in her eyes. "Start with Garret so he can complete his shuttle inspection." Wincing from the whistle, Toby moved among the away team to help them get their suits on and ready for Lox's inspection. Making sure each person he helped was at least familiar with the suit and it's controls. The memories of his first mission floating to the surface as he worked. Nick has already inspected security repeatedly, and had then ensured the other departments had what they needed from security as well to ensure everyone would be ready. Still no sign of Atzen though, he mused, It was times like this that he felt like he was the only commanding officer in security... He smirked at the thought, then moved with the others into line. His equipment was laid out for easy access and packing, basic survivor gear, rope, rations in case something happened, water... he figured it'd be hot down there, and a plethora of other equipment. He then had his hand phaser on his hip in perfect working condition as well as a phaser rifle. Maybe he went overboard with ensuring his security teams were outfitted in the same manner, and laid out exactly the same... they even had to pack it the same way, in the event they needed something they could just reach in and grab what was needed out of any of the packs. Justin got out of the co-pilot's seat and moved out with the others "Mr. Garrett? I need to check your suit." Matthew strode out of the shuttle, and let the commander check his suit. Kat moved from beside the counselor and headed over to have her EVA suit double checked. Although this was a mission it was also time off the ridge even if for a while. It would be proof that she needed to be away for a while. Toby made his way back over to K`y's side now that he knew people were getting suited up alright. Kylee glanced up as the others began to fall in line for inspection before climbing on board the shuttle. She sighed, grabbing her bag and EVA suit. Looking to the captain, she furrowed her brow in thought, before walking over to her. "Captain, I was hoping to discuss something with you.. I know it is a bit last minute, but we've both been rather busy." Vilqa glanced to the gathering officers and nodded as she looked toward Nix with Toby near by her. "Late?" she question and stated at the same time by intonation, "What do you require Lieutenant?" Toby turned his attention from watching the others to watching Kylee and K`y. Kylee looked to the others before focusing her attention to Vilqa. "Captain, I think that I would be of more use elsewhere. On the surface, we already know what to espect, and it's more of a rescue mission. I think that I, along with Crewman Daephon, could be of more use searching the asteroid fields, to try and locate the exact point of origin of the asteroids." "And you believe there is nothing of significance for you nor Daephone on the surface to study?" The Captain glanced to the male with the supplies that he carried in earlier, "He does seem eager to hit the surface." Kylee turned her gaze to Takis, rubbing her hand against her chin. "Hmm.. that is true.. Perhaps it couldn't hurt to have him there to aid in the mission, and I believe he would do well to be given such a task.." she said, turning her gaze back to the captain. "Of course, the decision is ultimately up to you where you think we would be of more use.." Takis was hanging back, trying to eavesdrop without being too obvious. It would be a letdown if he didn't get to go planetside, but then the other option could be exciting, too. He fidgeted while he waited to be cleared by the security officers. Toby glanced over at the man being spoken about then looked at K`y and murmured, "He's quite eager to go." Vilqa thought of the various situations, "You stay; he goes." There was little else said other than, "It will be a great experience for him plus you can get various samples from the surface." Kylee nodded, looking to Takis. "Thank you Captain. I was curious if you would allow me to explore the asteroid field in a shuttle. We're far enough back to not have to worry about radiation, and it might answer a few questions," she asked questioning. Cait slithered into her EVA suit, smiling as it fit her perfectly. She'd finally regained the weight she'd lost on Katan'ka..well, the chest area was a bit snug but then that was to be expected from nursing a baby. She got in line for Justin's inspection, seriously glad he wasn't flying. She'd have to break the new pilot in. Justin checked over Garret's suit "Seals check out. Go finish your preflight." He moved on to check Cait's suit. "Doc, your suit... has a jammed moisture recycler. For now, it's okay. I'll get the repair part and get it in place before we take off. Unless you want to replicate a new suit?" Cait pursed her lips thinking. "I'd rather you fix this one if you can. We've got a LOT of history together and as long as its safe, I'd like to hang on to my lucky EVA suit." Matthew went back to the shuttle. He had most of the system checks done. He pulled out a tricorder, and finished up his preflight checks. Fifteen minutes later, Matthew walked back out to the group. "Preflight inspection complete. Everything checks out. We're ready to go at any time" Matthew said, waiting for the inspections to be over with, and the captain to give the order to get underway "Thank you Ensign." Vilqa confirmed hearing the report from Garrett. The Counselor struggled with getting into her suit. She hated them... well hate probably wasn't the right word. Ivri felt confined in them. The small Deltan just could not understand why a person would want to be cut off of the rest of society by placing a bridge, such as this suit between them and others. The Counselor stopped midway through and asked both the Captain and First Officer. "Are you sure it wouldn't be better for me to stay aboard the Ridge?" The part klingon Captain audibly moaned, what was with this crew. "Please explain to me why a counselor would be better here rather than on the surface where those affected are?" She was clearly agitated, Nix and now Ivri. "Well, with both of the doctors down below I could help out as a temporary medic aboard the ship..." Ivri trailed off as she thought that those same things were true about where they were going. The Counselor would do what both the Commander and the Captain wanted it really wasn't for her to question their authority. She just felt confined right now in the suit that fit good, at least the parts that she had on. The Counselor would and could easily take it off. "You do make some valid points; however," Vilqa leaned in, "Do not make this a habit to try and weasel out of away missions. There will only be so many opportunities to do so. Take off your EVA suit and report to sickbay immediately." She wasn't so much angry at Ivri it was the fact that both Nix and Ivri contacted her now, the very last minute to be removed from the away team. The situation, not the people pissed me off. "Anybody else not feel like going?" She yelled out to the team gathered as she reacted on pure instinct and stress more than anything else. <>
